Joe Vickers, Leeds

After growing up in Manchester and earning two degrees in Physics (MPhys) and Nuclear Science (MSc) from The University of Manchester, it seemed only natural to move to Yorkshire and begin studying for a PhD in Chemical Engineering. This has allowed me to pursue my long-standing fascination with all things nuclear from its applications in the future of energy to the politics and policy that have shaped the industry as it exists today.

It is this legacy of nuclear development that provides the motivation for my project, which aims to develop a pre-treatment process for Magnox and “Exotic” nuclear wastes that will enable them to be safely disposed of in a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF). This work is being supervised by Professor Bruce Hanson of The University of Leeds and is sponsored by Radioactive Waste Management Ltd with a view to providing a vital contingency to the UK waste disposal strategy.
